The Department of Music at NC State provides educational and performance opportunities for students and community participants through a variety of musical experiences and academic courses. We serve as a cultural resource for the university and the greater community through performances and presentations offered by our students, community groups, and faculty.
Private support is critical to the success of the Department of Music. Tuition and fees only cover a portion of the total cost to maintain and further develop an exceptional music program at NC State. Your gifts allow our programs to grow and thrive.
Your gifts can help provide:
- High quality performance experiences for students
- One-of-a-kind interactions with exceptional visiting artists
- Expanded hands-on music technology offerings
- Access to high quality instruments and facilities
- Faculty development
- High impact student travel experiences
"In many ways, my experiences in the NC State Department of Music set the stage for my life after graduation. My professional work is as an Enterprise Architect, which requires lateral thinking and a willingness to lead others toward a 'better way' of doing business. Such leadership skills and creativity are exactly the traits that students of the arts develop. Furthermore, I now have leadership roles in community non-profit music groups that improve quality of life throughout the Triangle. I don't believe these organizations would be a part of my life without my musical experience at NC State."

The Campaign for NC State
The Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign is the most ambitious fundraising effort in the history of NC State, with a goal of $1.6 billion in private support from the university’s remarkable alumni and friends. Meeting this goal will allow NC State to achieve its potential as one of the most vital and prestigious research universities on the planet. To date, more than $15.1 million has been raised for the arts on campus, but there is more work to be done.
All gifts made to the Department of Music count toward the Campaign. Before the campaign concludes in 2021, we are asking supporters like you to help us move music at NC State forward by funding strategic priorities including:
Annual operating support
Every gift, no matter its size, makes a difference in the lives of student-musicians at NC State University. Because annual gifts are typically used soon after they are received, we depend on ongoing support from alumni, parents, and community members. Annual giving is your opportunity to influence the future of the music department, year after year.
The Department of Music has three annual operating funds that you can support:
- Music Enhancement Fund – our most flexible funding for the greatest needs of the department, its faculty, and its students.
- Marching Band Fund – annual funding for the needs of the marching band, including equipment, travel, uniforms, and more.
- A Cappella Enhancement Fund – funding to support the four student-led A Cappella groups affiliated with the music department: Acappology, Grains of Time, Ladies in Red, and Wolfgang A Cappella.

In a highly competitive recruiting environment for the best and brightest students, many talented students are seeking a school where they can pursue their chosen field of study and continue to make music. As the costs of higher education rise, it has become increasingly difficult for students to continue participation in a music ensemble throughout their academic career at NC State.
Your gift in support of renewable scholarships for the recruitment and retention of new music students would benefit the Music Department in two critical ways. First, scholarships show prospective students that they can continue to explore their musical talents by participating in our ensembles while pursuing any major at the university. Second, by mitigating some financial concerns, renewable scholarships increase the likelihood that students stay involved in music and continue to play for years to come. Students who remain in an ensemble throughout their entire college career also provide a valuable leadership role in the ensemble, which raises the quality of performances and enhances every student’s musical experience.

Industry and job demand in music technology has been steadily rising over the past decade. In keeping with the mission and goals of NC State University, the Department of Music seeks to develop expanded curricula in music technology that will help prepare the industry’s future innovators and expose students early to emerging trends in the music industry.
The Department of Music is uniquely positioned to support the needs of the field of music engineering technology. In collaboration with colleagues across campus in areas such as the College of Engineering and the College of Design, the music faculty has a rich history of developing interdisciplinary coursework that explores music in the context of other disciplines.
The music department is currently equipped with three digital audio workstation labs and one 24-station computer classroom equipped with a variety of music software and a reduced version of the larger digital audio workstation labs at each station. The department also expanded its outreach efforts by offering a music technology summer camp for middle and high school students.
