PMC Lecture: Ululation

March 21, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Louise Meintjes (Associate Professor of Music and Cultural Anthropology, Duke University)

Millions of women in the Global South ululate out into the world from a range of religious, class, ethnic, national, and historical positions. How is it executed, when is it noticed as artistic, and what does this trilling exclamation achieve? A close listen to rural Zulu women’s performances offers some insights.

Meintjes is associate professor of Music and Cultural Anthropology at Duke and author of Dust of the Zulu: Ngoma Aesthetics after Apartheid  (Duke UP 2017). She has documented performance in one community in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa for 25 years.
