Arts Entrepreneurship Minor

There are a number of unique aspects to the Arts Entrepreneurship Minor. Based on the concepts of both intellectual and experiential readiness, the Minor helps emerging arts entrepreneurs leverage a broad knowledge base to create successful arts ventures. Using an innovative classroom experience, a focus on informed decision-making and a cutting-edge curriculum, this is simply the most comprehensive program in the country.


The Experience

Innovative Teaching

Using an innovative, adaptive and energetic teaching philosophy, the Arts Entrepreneurship Minor challenges students to discover and channel their entire education into an entrepreneurial arts career. For students pursuing a science or technology degrees and are interested in developing a arts-related products or those wanting to leverage their major in the Arts domains, the Minor is the first step in understanding how to best position their ideas in the arts marketplace.

Experience on Two Levels

Collaboration and teamwork are critical for any emerging arts entrepreneur. The Capstone course focuses on teamwork while the remainder of the courses focus on entrepreneurial collaboration. By learning to help other students with their dreams, empowerment and confidence emerge for both parties. This practice in self-efficacy development is crucial to sustaining and scaling any entrepreneurial venture.

The Minor

Degree Plan

We designed the Arts Entrepreneurship Minor as a three-semester sequence of five courses.


EMA 365 – Foundations in Arts Entrepreneurship (GEP IP)
Offered spring and fall semesters
Foundations in Arts Entrepreneurship is a course that helps students re-conceive art as not simply something one sees in museums or hears in concert halls. Instead, the course looks at art conceived broadly and helps students consider art not just in everyday life, but within the myriads of disciplines on campus. Going beyond simple demographic studies, the course examines consumption routines as students develop their own marketing materials.


EMA 370 – Practical Arts Entrepreneurship (GEP IP)
Offered spring and fall semesters
Practical Arts Entrepreneurship is a “nuts and bolts” course were students lay the groundwork in starting for- and non-profit arts ventures. But this is only the beginning. What this course delivers is an overview of the cultural and economic environment of the arts—something no other arts entrepreneurship course in the country can provide.


EMA 375 – Understanding the Arts Economies
Offered fall semester. Prerequisite – EMA 370
Understanding the Arts Economies takes students on a tour of how typical arts economies operate and the challenges emerging arts entrepreneurs will face upon launching. Focusing on a broad and varied swath of readings and data analysis, students are exposed to the interweaving of cultural consumption, artistic imputes and economic systems unique to the arts.


EMA 430 – Capstone Experience in Arts Entrepreneurship
Offered spring semesters. Prerequisite – EMA 375
The Capstone Experience in Arts Entrepreneurship takes students out of the classroom and puts them in the field. Student teams—purposed as arts consultants—engage Raleigh arts entrepreneurs and arts organizations as they grapple with common problems faced by typical arts businesses. Students can both experience “real world” arts entrepreneurship and impact the Raleigh arts community in ways lasting for years.


Advised Elective – 3 credit
The advised elective is designed to help students leverage aspects of related NC State class offerings in support of their arts business goals.

The Why

It makes perfect sense for NC State to offer an Arts Entrepreneurship Minor as the University has a number of entrepreneurship efforts on campus.


Since many students possess arts training prior to attending NC State and remain engages in both arts activities and courses, the Arts Entrepreneurship Minor serves a varied student body focusing on those considering an entrepreneurial arts career.
It is not just the artist who creates art…innovative ideas from many disciplines aid in the production of art. That’s why we designed the Minor to serve students who are interested in the arts, yet want to explore how their major can entrepreneurially impact the production of art. We know that emerging arts entrepreneurs from many disciplines can revolutionize arts production and need the ability to communicate to—and understand— the very market they are trying to target, artists.
