Music is part of who you are. No matter what that looks like for you, we're here to help you keep playing, listening, learning, creating and connecting.
Music empowers us to think and do the extraordinary—and the ordinary—every day. We listen to music to help us focus, unwind or power through. We dream up new ideas and communicate them through music. We forge lifelong friendships by sharing music and creating it together.
The Department of Music is where all students at NC State, in any major, cultivate and explore their musical interests no matter where they lead. Through our courses and programs, students grow as musicians, develop entrepreneurial skills, learn new technologies for music making, and gain an understanding of the theory, history and cultural significance of music.
Whether you’re a musician, enthusiast or innovator looking to change how music is made, your passion for music will thrive at NC State.
20+ performing ensembles
Our ensemble courses and performing student organizations offer music-making opportunities for all NC State student-musicians plus some community members.
Don’t miss our orchestras, choirs, a cappella groups, concert bands and jazz bands performing several times each year in Stewart Theatre. Student tickets are just $5.
available to you
All of our courses are open to any student at NC State regardless of their major, and many will satisfy your GEP requirements. Follow your interests where they lead.
[The music department] is one of the beautiful facets of NC State University that make this place feel like home.
